Fans Keep Big Bang Theory Forums Playful Despite...
Online forums can sometimes be very distant or impersonal, with members simply posting their own opinions without an expectation of response or conversation in return. The fan forums on the CBS television show, The Big Bang Theory, however, have created very personable and comfortable forums where fans can post their frustrations, but also be social and have some fun. Whether commenting on how...

The Office Storify
dkirkhoff: I like how your presentation focused on the different principles that make a successful social media site/community. Going through the principles and showing how the Office community satisfies each principle was a really engaging way to analyze the community. It made your presentation very focused and easy to follow!

ltulgren: Storify Presentation-DIS Boards I thought it was really interesting how close the members became on the forums. The fact that they would plan events and get togethers via the blog was really intriguing to me. It shows how comfortable they are on the internet, being able to plan get togethers with people they met on the site. I also thought it was really fun that they do gift giving...

Sabermetrics Storify
lampert19: I’ve never heard of sabermetrics before so I had no idea how big it was in the baseball industry. It was very interesting to learn about! One of the points in the presentation that stuck out to me was the idea of people testing the validity of their statistics or algorithms online. It’s interesting that they have blogs devoted to this idea.

The Sing Off →
andersdh88: I thought it was really cool how the groups tweet during the show and interact with their fans. It’s also fun how they use twitter to ask the fans questions and then allow them to answer during the show. It makes it that much more interactive. It seems like the show has taken huge advantage of using Twitter to involve its fans and promote the show.

Etsy Storify
erinnk: I really liked the quote you shared in your presentation about Etsy being more than a marketplace, rather, a community. I was also really impressed by the website literacyhead.com that you shared. It’s really cool that the site uses art to help people learn to read, especially through its collaboration with Etsy. That’s awesome that the site asked to use your work. Beautiful picture!

Can Twitter Ever Have Academic Value? →
Interesting article relevant to social media classes/studies. The article itself is a summary of  a document created ”for academics wishing to use Twitter”, written by Amy Mollett, Danielle Moran and Patrick Dunleavy from The London School of Economics and Political Science. (The article links to the manual if you care to check it out.)  In the article summary though, the author, Adi...

magichodge: /slideshow One of the things that I found most interesting in your presentation was the copyright issue. It makes sense, but I never really thought about not being able to perform or watch a certain trick because of it. Is that ever frustrating for you when you want to learn something new or show off a trick you’ve acquired on YouTube? Also, the flourishing and tricks that you...

Fantasy Football
wick333: I thought that the videos of the NFL players advertising themselves were hilarious. They had some pretty impressive skills to show off as well! It’s interesting to see how the fans have caught the attention of professional players, where even the players become involved in the community through things such as these advertisements. Do you think that their videos affect the fans’...

Duct Tape Storify!
missxandra: One idea that stuck out for me in your presentation was when you said that “anything that can be made, can be made out of duct tape.” Clearly people have been trying out many different ideas, with things ranging from purses and flowers all the way to prom dresses! It’s incredible what people can make out of something as simple as duct tape; I loved seeing the example pictures of...

Social Mediation: Managing Multiple Platforms  →
Kind of a useful/relevant article since many of us now have multiple social networking platforms. Determine your platform The first step mentions status posting and how there are multiple...

bysbigtbabar: The concept of online flute lessons with Nina Perlove via the internet was super interesting. I’ve heard of online tutorial videos, but the concept of live lessons was really neat. Storify Presentation
hallewri111: The point of your presentation that I found most intriguing was the concept of “the lounge”. What I found especially strange was that you said they didn’t even converse within the room. I...

anniehass: One of the things that I thought was really interesting in your presentation was how much detail the fans noticed about the show, such as with the printer being in another show. 6 Historic Events as They Might Have Been Tweeted →
Here is kind of a fun little distraction about social media. hallewri111: The staff that works for Facebook never seems to be content with the layout of the insanely popular site, for it is constantly being altered. I found the idea of the fans trying to change the show/appeal to the producers really interesting. It was really cool to see how involved and supportive the people were in the auditioning communities that you studied. The Happiest Place On Earth!
I thought the point that you made about having a place available to look for advice without worrying about an ulterior motive was really interesting. I feel like people tend to worry when asking the owner of something for advice on their product, or in this case place, that they’ll say something to benefit themselves, rather than the person asking for help. Tweeting From a Cell Phone →

Tweeting teen can handle public life
ltulgren: After reading this article one passage stood out and will not leave me. The passage is about how teens code their messages and hide their true message. I came across this article (by Benedict Carey) posted on the New York Times website and found it pretty interesting. Change in Facebook Habits?
Now that we are in college, do most people think they’ve started to use Facebook more or less than they did in high school? Or would you say that you use it in relatively the same way? I would say that it’s pretty apparent that social media plays a relatively large role in our generation’s lives. After reading Ryan Cordell’s article on Facebook defriending, “Unfriending for Sanity”, (http://chronicle.com/blogs/profhacker/unfriending-for-sanity/33405) I started to think about how we use social media to define different aspects of who we are. A Changing Internet
In Virginia Heffernan’s article “The Old Internet Neighborhoods”, she at one point describes a website that started to disappear: “Last month, a once-popular eight-old-year British board about mental health went dark with a note: ‘The Internet has changed significantly.’”  That phrase, “The Internet has changed significantly”, really struck me. In our culture and in this day and age, technology...
